The Secret To Getting A Great Nights Sleep

It is vitally important that we get some good quality sleep at night. That is the time when our bodies can repair any damage we have done to them and when our minds can sort through the memories of the day. Yet lots of us have real trouble getting to sleep at night, some people only struggle for a few days or weeks, but some people suffer on for years with the problem. Here are 3 ways you can improve your chances of getting to sleep quickly:
Keep to a specific routine: You might think having a routine would make very little difference, but actually it allows your brain to know in advance what it needs to be doing. As you will be going to bed at roughly the same time each night then your brain can help you to wind down so you aren't full of energy when you go to bed, and if you wake up at the same time every day then it can help you to wake up feeling refreshed too. Also with a set schedule you are more likely to plan your evening so you are ready for sleep at the time you need to be, not cramming in as many things as possible which then leaves your head spinning when you climb into bed.
Try to cut out anything which can distract you: When you are lying there awake while everyone else sleeps then you will notice even the smallest noise and it will distract and annoy you, so do anything you can to stop them. If that means you need to get rid of any clocks near your bedroom which tick all night long, or you need to make the dog sleep in the kitchen, then do it.
Obviously there is nothing you can do about some noises though, noisy neighbors, people in the street outside etc, they are beyond your control, however you can buy devices to help mask the noise. Don't expect some sort of fantastic machine which can cancel out all that noise though, really it is just a machine to help drown out some of the noise, but it still helps. There are a lot of these on the market right now but probably the most popular one is made by Marpac and is the Marpac Sleepmate 980a. They all work in a pretty similar way, they produce a constant but relatively quiet noise that you can concentrate on so you don't notice some of the other noises.
Tell you partner if you need to: Is your partner keeping you up? Sleeping the same bed as somebody else is fine as long as they don't make a lot of noise or move around a lot, but if they do then that can keep you and even wake you up after you manage to get to sleep, yet people refuse to talk to their partner about it in case they upset them. At some point you are going to have to talk to them though if they are keeping you up. Start off by finding some solutions online to the problem and then you can ask them to try them out, if those solutions don't work or they refuse to try them then try sleeping in different beds.
I know these things seem extreme, but if you really are having trouble sleeping then they can help you out and isn't it worth a bit of effort to finally be able to get a good nights sleep?
