Diets, and dieting aids, are a multibillion dollar market in the United States. This should come as no real shock given that many, many studies from both federal government and private research workers have recognized the rapidly rising rates of excessive weight in almost all segments of the population. These two details appear to be at odds with each other. Briefly, this is nuts in the extreme. Any trustworthy nutritionist will advise you that a middle aged female demands about 1,400 calories every day to maintain current weight and will start to lose weight when calories are limited to about 1,100 daily. For the woman discussed in the NY Times article, she doesn't need HCG in any way, at 500 calories a day, she's starving herself already.
The answer to slimming down is not wasting hundreds or thousands of dollars on doubtful "miracle" programs. The solution is to stay with a realistic and proper diet and don't disregard the nutritional needs your body has.
Put a different way, our species has evolved over hundreds and hundreds of years and has survived quite a few challenges on the way. Our latest challenge, at least in the west, is the fact that we do not get enough exercise and don't eat at all correctly. That is, what we really need for the body to function effectively.
Generally, we take in a lot of red meat, just too many carbohydrates, and too much sugar. We do not eat nearly enough fruits, vegetables, grain, or fish. Rather than preparing our own meals, we too frequently take off to the local fast food vendor. In place of regular exercise, we sit down on our couches and watch others play games.
And then question why we add pounds!
In the long run, you do not need any "magic" cure, you need to exercise more and consume less food. You won't just be healthier, you will also spend less.
